2024 Subaru Outback launched in Malaysia with Turbo XT variant, from RM280k
Perhaps the only “lifted wagon” in Malaysia, the 2024 Subaru Outback has finally been launched in the country, 5 years after its global debut in 2019. Referred to as an “SUV” by Subaru, the Subaru Outback for Malaysia comes in two variants, and with a starting price of RM280,390.
- Subaru Outback 2.5 i-Touring EyeSight – RM 280,390
- Subaru Outback 2.4 XT Touring EyeSight – RM310,390
The range-topping “XT” variant gets a 2.4-litre turbocharged engine while the i-Touring variant gets a naturally aspirated 2.5-litre engine. Naturally, both variants are equipped with “boxer” or “flat-four” engines. But more on this later.
The body style of the Outback itself is unique and it was popularized by cars like the Volvo V70 XC and several “all-terrain” wagons by Mercedes-Benz. The Outback is essentially an estate/wagon version of the Subaru Legacy (The Outback is still known as the Legasy Outback in Japan). It also gets a raised ride height and plastic claddings all around.
Measuring 4,870 mm long, 1,875 mm wide, 1,675 mm tall, and with a wheelbase measuring 2,745 mm long, the Subaru Outback is about the size of a Toyota Camry, albeit its wagon body and lifted ride height. The only other Japanese wagon in the Malaysian market would be the Mazda 6 Wagon, although it isn’t of the lifted kind.
Built with an adventurous lifestyle in mind, the Subaru Outback for Malaysia is rather decked out with “off-road” items like roof rails, all-around plastic claddings, big claddings on the front bumpers, and fog lights. It seems that all that is left to do to make it even more “soft-road-capable” would be to fit a set of all-terrain tires.
If you go for the “entry-level” Subaru Outback 2.5L i-Touring Eyesight, you will get the following exterior equipment as standard:
- LED Automatic headlights with LED DRLs
- Steering responsive headlights
- LED taillights
- Roof rails with black finishing
- 18-inch dark grey alloy wheels
- Body-colour finishing for side mirrors, door handles, and antenna
The range-topping Subaru Outback 2.4L XT Eyesight adds:
- 18-inch dual-tone alloy wheels
- Satin finishing for side mirrors, door handles, and antenna
Although only 2 variants are offered for the Subaru Outback in Malaysia, they are significantly different as both come with different powertrains. The 2.5L i-Touring EyeSight gets a naturally aspirated 2.5-litre boxer engine while the 2.4L XT Eyesight gets a 2.4-litre turbocharged boxer engine. The less powerful variant’s powertrain setup is as such:
- Engine: 2.5-litre, flat-4 (boxer), naturally aspirated, direct fuel injection
- Transmission: Lineartronic CVT with 8 virtual “manual” gears
- Max horsepower: 188 PS @ 5,800 rpm
- Max torque: 252 Nm @3,400-4,600 rpm
- Drivetrain: Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive
- 0-100 km/h: 9.6 seconds
- Top speed: 206 km/h
- Fuel Consumption: 7.3 l/100km
The more powerful Outback XT variant gets the following setup:
- Engine: 2.4-litre, flat-4 (boxer), turbocharged, direct fuel injection
- Transmission: Lineartronic CVT with 8 virtual “manual” gears
- Max horsepower: 249 PS @ 5,200-6,000 rpm
- Max torque: 350 Nm @2,000-4,800 rpm
- Drivetrain: Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive
- 0-100 km/h: 7.5 seconds
- Top speed: 221 km/h
- Fuel Consumption: 9.0 l/100km
Inside, the Subaru Outback boasts a large portrait head unit layout that can also be found in the WRX. The interior is decorated with Nappa leather and you get an outdoorsy yet semi-luxurious cabin. Among the standard interior items for the 2024 Subaru Outback in Malaysia are:
