Mercedes-Benz EQG Concept Unveiled – EV G-Class With Square Spare Wheel?
At the 2021 IAA Mobility, Mercedes-Benz has revealed the Mercedes-Benz EQG concept along with an arsenal of EVs.
The EQG concept is easily recognizable as an electrified Mercedes-Benz G-Class, with its iconic boxy design and round headlights.
The origins of the successful G-Class model date back to 1979. For more than four decades, the “G” has thus embodied the luxury off-road vehicle from Mercedes-Benz.
Still built on a ladder-frame chassis, the batteries have been integrated into the ladder frame to ensure a low centre of gravity.
No technical details have been released apart from the use of independent suspension, four individual electric motors, a 2-speed gearbox (high and low), and a 22-inch wheel-size.
One eye-catching feature on the outside of the EQG is the square “spare wheel” cover that is in place of the iconic wheel cover on the Mercedes-Benz G-Class. Instead of a spare wheel, the cover now houses a charging cable for the electrified G-Class.
The Mercedes-Benz EQG will of course face the legendary test track on the 1445-metre high Schöckl mountain in Graz (60° gradient) at the end of its development into a series model.
According to Mercedes-Benz, the electrification of the G-Class will make it a much more capable off roader.
