Volvo Car Malaysia becomes the first car brand to win a Gold Effie at the 2026 Malaysia Effie Awards
Volvo Car Malaysia achieved a landmark victory at the 2026 Malaysia Effie Awards, taking home the coveted Grand Effie, Brand of the Year, and an exclusive Gold Effie—marking the first time an automotive brand has earned a Gold trophy in the award show’s history. The triumph was anchored by the success of its groundbreaking campaign, “Selamat is Volvo,” which redefined conventional automotive marketing in the region.
The award-winning initiative launched by introducing what appeared to be a mystery car brand named Selamat—teased through camouflaged vehicles, enigmatic digital outdoor displays, and online speculation. The reveal inverted standard industry tropes: Selamat was not a new electric vehicle challenger, but rather Volvo renewing its 60-year safety commitment to Malaysian drivers.
While Selamat is a daily greeting spoken over 650 million times across the nation, the word translates directly to safety and protection. By addressing the sobering reality that road accidents remain a leading cause of death among young Malaysians, the campaign shifted safety from a technical spec sheet into a deep cultural value. The emotional message resonated strongly, generating a 90.8% measurable response rate and cementing the powerful national association: Selamat itu Volvo, and Volvo itu Selamat.
Volvo Car Malaysia Sales & Marketing Director, Patricia Yaw said, “In a competitive market where every brand claim advanced technology, safety risks becoming just another feature – spoken about, but rarely felt. The objective of Selamat was never about making noise, but about placing human life back at the absolute core of mobility. To receive this level of recognition from the Effies is deeply humbling. It shows that when you approach an audience with genuine cultural empathy, that emotional connection naturally translates into meaningful, lasting impact.”
The campaign’s execution relied on a multi-agency collaboration including Grey Malaysia, Invictus Blue, Dox Digital, LAB Activations, Directors Think Tank, and Live Experience. Activations ranged from real-world drive experiences and crash car displays to viral digital debates that turned a traditional marketing effort into a sustained cultural movement. As the Grand Effie winner, the campaign is now eligible for international consideration, bringing Malaysia’s cultural interpretation of road safety to a global stage.
