Chery O5 launched in Malaysia, but is it an Omoda or is it not?
The facelifted Chery Omoda 5 has officially launched in Malaysia, but Chery Malaysia now calls it the Chery O5 even though the car itself still wears Omoda badging on the body. It’s another twist in the brand’s range of sub-brands and naming conventions, adding to the confusion over where exactly this SUV belongs.
Elsewhere, the facelift is sold as the Omoda C5 or Chery C5 depending on market. In Malaysia, the dual identity continues: branded as a Chery, badged as an Omoda.
Then again, it’s not the first time this has happened. Back in 2019, UMW Toyota marketed its C-segment sedan simply as the Corolla, even though the cars still carried Corolla Altis badges.
But back to Chery, only one high-spec variant is offered, priced at RM 116,800 OTR without insurance, which is RM 2,000 less than the outgoing H variant. The price includes a seven-year/150,000 km warranty, five years of free labour servicing and roadside assistance. Early-bird buyers get a three-year free service package, a 10-year/1,000,000 km powertrain warranty and instalments starting from RM 990 via Maybank HP.
What’s changed?
- New transmission: 1.5-litre turbo (156 PS/230 Nm) now paired with a 6-speed DCT instead of a CVT
- Suspension: torsion beam replaced by multilink rear setup
- Design tweaks: new inverted L-shaped DRLs, re-profiled X-shaped bumper, revised grille, new 18-inch wheels, black accents instead of red highlights
Chery 05 Features
The cabin layout is unchanged: twin 10.25-inch displays, touch climate controls, and bucket-style seats with beige piping. Equipment includes auto LED headlights, panoramic sunroof, ventilated/powered front seats, powered tailgate, wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, Qi charger, Sony eight-speaker audio and a 360° camera with transparent view.
The Chery 05 gets six airbags, stability control and a full suite of driver assistance features: AEB, adaptive cruise with stop & go, lane centring, blind spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, door opening warning and high beam assist.
