Smart #5 makes Malaysian debut – 442PS, over 500km WLTP range, 800V platform

Smart Malaysia has taken the covers off its largest and most advanced model to date, the Smart #5, at the Malaysia Auto Show 2025. Making its first appearance in the region, the all-electric SUV signals the brand’s move into a more mainstream family-oriented segment while still retaining its focus on style and innovation.

Unlike the earlier Smart #1 and #3 models, which leaned more toward compact crossover form factors, the Smart #5 is a full-fledged D-segment SUV. Built on Geely’s SEA (Sustainable Experience Architecture) platform, the vehicle promises not just more space but also longer range and faster charging—key selling points for Malaysian EV buyers.

While the Brabus-tuned high-performance variant grabbed headlines overseas, the standard #5 on display at MAEPS offers a more practical interpretation of the platform. It is expected to come with both single-motor rear-wheel-drive and dual-motor all-wheel-drive options, with outputs ranging from 335 to 442 PS depending on the variant. Torque figures vary but remain ample for daily use, especially with instant electric acceleration.

Range is another highlight. Equipped with a large-capacity battery (reportedly up to 100 kWh), the Smart #5 is expected to offer over 500 km of WLTP-rated driving range. The vehicle supports 800V charging architecture, which should allow rapid top-ups—potentially from 10% to 80% in under 30 minutes with a suitable DC fast charger.

Design-wise, the #5 departs from Smart’s compact urban roots, presenting a more rugged, upright silhouette. Styling elements include a squared-off rear end, slim lighting signatures, and subtle cladding that gives it a modern, outdoors-ready aesthetic. While still concept-inspired in appearance, the production version previewed in Malaysia looks close to final, especially in terms of dimensions and stance.

Inside, the cabin mirrors the tech-forward direction seen in other Smart models. A wide-screen digital dashboard setup dominates the front fascia, integrating driver and passenger displays with a central infotainment unit. Minimalist lines and premium finishes suggest that Smart is aiming for a more upscale positioning—likely to attract buyers looking at brands like Tesla, Hyundai’s Ioniq line, or even Volvo’s upcoming electric SUVs.

Smart Malaysia has not yet confirmed local specifications, pricing, or an official launch date, but hints suggest a rollout sometime in late 2025. Given that the #1 and #3 models are already available via local distributor Proton New Energy Technology (Pro-Net), the #5 is expected to follow a similar sales strategy, potentially with bookings opening later this year.

With the Smart #5, the brand is making a clear push into a more mature segment of Malaysia’s EV market—targeting not just early adopters, but also families and tech-savvy urbanites looking for space, performance, and modern features in a fully electric package.
