Volkswagen Golf Mk8.5 launched in Malaysia – GTI from RM255k*

Volkswagen Passenger Cars Malaysia (VPCM) has officially launched the facelifted Golf in Malaysia – The Volkswagen Golf Mk8.5. The refreshed locally assembled (CKD) hot-hatch now comes with two variants – the R-Line and the GTI. Pricing for the GTI is confirmed from RM255,990 (OTR without insurance, with VAP), while the R-Line’s price has yet to be announced.

Both variants now feature redesigned bumpers, complemented by slimmer and sharper headlights as well as a refreshed taillight design. The updated styling gives the Golf Mk8.5 a sportier and more aggressive appearance.

The return of the R-Line variant in our local market brings an introduction to a 1.5 eTSI mild-hybrid (MHEV) turbocharged engine that is able to produce 150 PS and 250 Nm of torque. The 48V battery helps deliver smoother acceleration and better fuel efficiency. Paired with the engine is a 7-speed DSG that sends power to the front wheels. Fuel consumption is rated as low as 5.5 L/100km

Exterior equipment that can be found on the R-Line model includes:

  • 225/45/17 Bridgestone Turanza

  • Advanced High-beam Control Dynamic Light Assist

  • VW logo puddle lights

On the inside, there is a new 12.9-inch media infotainment system with wireless Apple Carplay and Android Auto and 10-inch high-res Digital Cockpit Pro. Also standard across the range is the physical buttons on the steering wheel as opposed to a touch-sensitive button that was available on the Mk8 Golf. Other highlights on the interior includes:

  • 7-speaker sound system
  • IDA voice assistant & voice enhancer
  • 2 USB-C ports
  • Electronic parking brake with auto hold function

  • Multi-function sports steering wheel with buttons

The GTI nameplate has had a busy year in our local market. Back in May, VPCM introduced the Black Edition of the GTI that came with 18-inch Black Richmond alloy wheels, followed by the Sepang Edition that was launched last month as a tribute to Malaysia’s motorsport legacy. Now, the arrival of the Mk8.5 GTI marks the start of a new chapter with updated tech and design. The GTI Mk8.5 gets a power bump up by 20ps, making a total output of 265ps and 370nm of torque.

Exterior highlights of the GTI model includes:

  • Honeycomb front air intake with foglamp

The Golf R-Line will be cheaper than the GTI, but its official price has not been announced yet. It is expected to offer good value as the more practical and fuel-efficient version of the Golf.
