Next-gen BMW M3 – EV and ICE models will look nearly identical

BMW is preparing to usher in a new era for its legendary performance sedan with both electric and gasoline-powered versions of the next-generation BMW M3. According to Adrian van Hooydonk, BMW Group’s Head of Design, the BMW M3 electric vs gasoline comparison will be more about what’s under the hood than how it looks on the outside.
Speaking at CES 2025, Adrian van Hooydonk told BMWBLOG that future BMW combustion and electric models—including the M3—will share a unified design language. “You’ll be hard-pressed [from a distance] to tell which one is the electric one and which is the combustion engine,” he said.
Spy shots of both the upcoming BMW M3 EV (ZA0) and the next M Performance 3 Series (G50)show just how closely the models align visually. Even the petrol-powered M3 (G84) will mirror the electric version’s design, with minor differences like a slightly shorter nose on the EV due to packaging efficiencies.
Internally, both versions of the 2027 BMW M3 will feature the latest minimalist cockpit layout and the updated iDrive system. BMW is clearly aiming for consistency across powertrains, giving customers a familiar experience regardless of engine type.

The BMW M3 electric version is rumored to debut first, potentially as early as 2027, while the gasoline M3 is expected to enter production by July 2028. Both models are likely to come equipped exclusively with automatic transmissions, marking a shift away from the traditional manual gearbox.
The M3 EV is also expected to include a synthetic engine sound that mimics the tone of BMW’s iconic inline-six engine. Meanwhile, the upcoming gas-powered M3 will introduce a “new type of six-cylinder engine,” likely a mild-hybrid evolution of the current S58 powerplant.
While BMW has not confirmed drivetrain configurations, the gasoline-powered M3 may be available only with xDrive all-wheel drive. It remains uncertain whether the electric M3 will offer both rear-wheel and all-wheel drive variants, but it’s a possibility considering the platform’s flexibility.

Although BMW has not officially revealed launch dates, reliable sources indicate that the BMW M3 EV (ZA0) will be unveiled in 2027, followed by the next-gen BMW M3 ICE (G84) in 2028. These staggered releases reflect BMW’s strategy to gradually transition its performance lineup into the electrified future.
Whether you’re drawn to electric performance or the familiar roar of a combustion engine, the next-gen BMW M3 promises to deliver both—with nearly identical looks and shared tech features. BMW’s commitment to cohesive design across the board ensures the BMW M3 legacy will live on, regardless of drivetrain.
