Video: Hyundai Ioniq 5 Beats Tesla Model 3 In Korea NCAP Score – Still Want A Tesla?

Results of the Korea NCAP test for the Hyundai Ioniq 5 were recently released on the Korea NCAP official website. The Hyundai Ioniq 5 obtained an almost perfect score at 92.1/100 and secured of a Level 1 rating (5-star equivalent).
What comes as good news for the Korean EV is that it managed to beat the Tesla Model 3’s Korea NCAP score of 88.34/100. Yes, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 is an SUV and the Tesla Model 3 is a saloon, but both cars are prominent EVs in 2021.

First, we’ll have to look at the Korea NCAP scoring system. It is divided into three components with “Crash Test” being the bulk of scoring weight at 60%
  1. Crash test – 60 %
  2. Pedestrian safety – 20%
  3. Accident prevention – 20%
In these 3 areas/pillars, 22 items are tested and scored. The scoring system actually gives a total score of 105 but is adjusted to a 0-100 scale. The adjustment is rather peculiar, but I shall not get into that.

Crash Test – Tesla Model 3 Wins By A Hair

The Korea NCAP crash test is rather extensive in comparison to our ASEAN NCAP crash test
There are 9 items in total which add items like front partial collision, side pole impact, and seat safety over the ASEAN NCAP scoring that we are used to in Malaysia.
The Hyundai Ioniq 5 scores higher in seat safety, but the Tesla Model 3 score higher in the frontal impact test, resulting in a higher overall crash test score.
Hyundai Ioniq 5 Tesla Model 3
Front impact (16) 15.1 15.36
Front partial impact (16) 14.44 15.55
Side impact (16) 16 16
Side Pole impact (2) 1.95 1.87
Front partial impact (child) (4) 4 4
Side impact (child) (4) 4 4
Seat safety (4) 3.1 1.99
Seat belt reminder (0.5) 0.2 0.5
Advanced Airbag (0.5) 0.5 0.5
TOTAL (63*) 59.29 pts 59.77 pts
Percentage score (/60) 98.8% 99.6%
*The total adds up to 63, but the percentage is divided over a total of 60, eg. 59.29/60 and 59.77/60. Why? We don’t know.

Pedestrian Safety – Hyundai Ioniq 5 Wins

For pedestrian safety, the Korean NCAP test evaluates impact to the head and legs of the pedestrian. Leg impact scores are the same but the Hyundai Ioniq 5 has a significantly better head impact score.
Hyundai Ioniq 5 Tesla Model 3
Head Impact 14.46 11.52
Leg Impact 6 6
TOTAL (30) 20.46 17.52
Adjusted to scale of 20 13.64 11.68
Percentage score (/20) 68.2% 58.4%

Accident Prevention – Hyundai Ioniq 5 Leaves Tesla Model 3 In The Dust

Accident prevention evaluation is mainly the testing of advanced safety systems. The Korea NCAP test is not a checklist evaluation, but is actually a function verification test of each ADAS component.
Hyundai Ioniq 5 Tesla Model 3
AEB high speed (3) 2.95 2.64
AEB city mode (3) 2.7 3
AEB pedestrian (3) 2.72 2.35
AEB bicycle (2) 2 0.9
AEB night (2) 2 2
LKAS- Lane keep (4) 4 0
BSD - Blind spot detect (1) 0.5 1
RCTA- Rear cross traffic alert (2) 0.3 0
Speed limit alert (0.5) 0.5 0
Intelligent speed assist (1.5) 1.5 0
TOTAL (22*) 19.17 11.89
Percentage score (/20) 95.9% 59.5%
*The total adds up to 63, but the percentage is divided over a total of 60, eg. 19.17/20 and 11.89/20. Why? We don’t know.
Unfortunately for the Tesla Model 3, a lot of components seem lacking here, giving a winning advantage to the Hyundai Ioniq 5.
Overall, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 obtains a higher score in the Korea NCAP test than the Tesla Model 3. The Tesla Model 3 actually performs slightly better in the crash test area but loses out in accident prevention systems.
